Golden Heart City

We’ve been in Fairbanks for two weeks now, how did that happen.     After the journey, we hung around the rig for a few days and unwound.     We are all settled in at the park and officially started working.     We have a good crew and one more couple arrived yesterday.     One morning last week, several of us were woken up by a howling pack of wolves.     That was quite the Alaskan experience.     The weather has been pretty good, it almost hit 70* one day and we’ve been out on the bike path to North Pole.    One day we had a brief blizzard and the snow stuck around for 24 hours.    We’ve done a bit of exploring around town, but not too much yet.    Last Wednesday we took a ride down to Denali while we could still drive into the park.    The park is so big, it would be amazing to drive the 90 miles to the end of the road, but we had to stop at mile 30.    Mile 30 is the Tek cam...

Tips, tricks, facts and myths.

Road to Alaska:     Tips, tricks, facts and myths.     Gulf Shores, AL to Fairbanks AK.    Route through Paducah, Fargo, Portal Crossing, Cochrane AB to Dawson Creek, Alcan to Fairbanks.    Ford F250 Super Duty Diesel and 24’ bumper pull trailer.    We brought 1, 5 gallon jug of diesel with us.    (Didn’t use it on the trip.) We had 31 fill ups on our journey.    It should be noted that we filled up any time we saw a station beyond Cochrane Alberta and were near a 1/2 tank.    Multiple stations in the Milepost were closed due to being out of business or for sale.    If you think (should I fill up?) do it.   Alaska is a destination, but the journey shouldn’t be overlooked.    There is so much to see along the way, even more if it’s between May 1 and September 15th.    Take your time, smell the flowers and see the sites.   Things are expensive in Canada, gas and foo...

Border to Fairbanks

Image
Tuesday we had a short drive up to the border.     The welcome to Alaska sign is before the checkpoint.     We met a young man who was on his way up to work for a hunting guide.     He was on his 4th trip up to AK.     There was also an older gentleman there who was starting his walk from the border to Chilliwack BC.     He said he hopes to be there by the end of September.     He is pulling a wagon with his supplies and he has been sleeping about 100 yards from his food and snacks.     (Bear Mitigation….but they should be hung up.) The crossing was really smooth, the process and the roads.    The roads then turned rough, mainly up to the Taylor Highway.    The views were great again.    We spotted 3 moose out in a bog, standing in water and eating.    There was also a bald Eagle in the frame.    They were too far off for a good pic.   We resupplied in Tok an...
