You’ve Arrived

Image
My apologies about not posting in a few days.  We’ve done a bit of driving and decided to get to Florida early.  We went from Boone to Forsythe GA and stayed at the KOA after a few HH and BW spots fell through.  The stop was ok for an overnight, but I’m not sure what there is to do between Macon and Atlanta.     It started raining pretty hard and it continued through the morning.  We had a fuel stop not too far out of Forsythe.  Our next stop was supposed to be White Oak Pastures as a HH stop.  We decided on the way over to Bluffton GA that it was going to be too early to stop for the night.  We called and canceled our stay but still went to the farm.  We stopped here in the spring and loved it.  We had a late lunch and did some shopping.  We bought lots of regeneratively raised meats and got the kids some dog snacks.   Back on the road, we set our sites for Perry and the KOA.  We also tossed around the idea of drivin...

Blustery in Boone

Image
Yesterday was cold and breezy with a bit of drizzle and mist through the day.  The sun tried to make an appearance, but lost the battle multiple times.  We weren’t in a rush to leave so we just hung out and drank a lot of coffee.  We’ll, I drank a lot of coffee.   We took a drive up to Blowing Rock which is quite a bit slower in pace.  The weather was a little sportier at 43*, windy and raining harder than back in Boone.  We turned around and headed back to Boone.  We found diesel at $3.45 and topped our tank off.   Lost Province was open so it was time to get some wood fired wings.  Katy had the Tomato Soup.  While eating at the bar, a young guy came and sat by us.  He got carded and I saw he was from Oregon.  We started talking and learned he is originally from Boone, but lives in Bend, over by St Charles. Small world, we lived over that way when we first moved to Bend.   We took the long way back to the campground and h...

Blue Ridge Parkway Round 2

Image
The only things that were blue on the Blue Ridge Parkway were some cars and the sky.  The day started off really nice and we decided to drive a piece of the parkway that we’ve already checked out.  We took the kids for a lap and then hit the road.   Town was less busy than Sunday and the parkway wasn’t packed.  It was definitely busier than May though.  I think there are spots that are beyond peak for colors, but some spots were still great.  The views were great and we made several stops along the way.  We went back to Linville Falls and we did the short hike.  The fall colors were beyond peak down there, but it was still nice.   We then headed back towards town and had a late lunch at Local.  The food was good and it’s in a cool spot by campus.  While we were in town, the weather took an expected turn for the worse.  It was supposed to start raining and storm all night.  We got back to the trailer and walked the dogs jus...

Back in Boone

Yesterday we drove west from Durham to Boone.  This is our first and only revisit to a place in 30 states.  We loved it here in May and wanted to see if it still had a good feeling.  The drive was about 3 hours and and was pretty uneventful.  Only 30 miles of it was new road.  We finished up a pretty darn good audiobook too.   We got set up and walked the dogs a bit.  We then headed into town to explore again.  Town was way busier than May.  School is back in session at Appalachian State and there are a ton of “us” tourists up looking at the fall colors.  We found a parking spot and put our name on the list at Lost Province.   With our 45 minute wait, we walked town and went back to the Mast General Store.  I fought the urge and successfully walked out without a Winkler Knife or Tomahawk.  The pull to purchase one was strong,  I’ve been referred to as a knife hoe in the past.  The fall colors are peak in some are...

Back to NC

Image
Yesterday we had a 5 hour drive which turned into an almost 7 hour road day.  We drive 65 on the freeway and stopped for gas and lunch in VA.  That turned into an hour pit stop.  We also pulled over at a rest area for the kids.   We got down to Durham NC and pulled into our Harvest Host for the night.  We were the 9th rig at Mystic Farm and Distillery.  We found a semi level spot and went to check things out.  There were quite a few folks around, especially with 9 rigs parked out back.   The distillery was bustling and we were able to look around and behind the scenes.  The bourbon was good.  We did a tasting and then followed up with a few drinks.  We met a couple from MN who has been on the road a year.  We chatted with them for about an hour and then went our separate ways for dinner.   A taco truck had arrived and they had the best Al Pastor I’ve had since San Diego.  After dark, we watched an old movie and called...
