Amistad National Rec Area

Yesterday was mostly spent at the water.  It was in the low 80s.  It was breezy and a bit of a project to paddle, but a great day at the lake.  We started the day out with coffee and dog walks.  Then I went to Home Depot for some sawzall blades. We broke two the day before trying to rig the bike rack and I wanted to replace them.   Based on recommendations from the owners here and a NPS LE Ranger, we paddled at two locations.  The rock formations and side inlets are so cool to paddle around.  Our first stop was Rough Canyon.  It was a 20 mile drive from the trailer.  It was really windy so we only went a bit over a mile. There were turtles everywhere, must have seen two dozen.  We also met a couple from MN who gave us some tips on cheap camping.  They’ve been on the road since Sept.   Our second stop was at Governors Landing for a snack.  The water was about 200yds away and really rocky. A Ranger came by so I asked him wha...

Del Rio, Macgyver and Tacos

Yesterday started out like a foggy day on the Oregon Coast.  Not raining, but everything was wet...it eventually was sunny and 70*. We slow rolled the morning and had a chill day exploring Del Rio.  We also looked at options for the bike rack.  @yakimaracks did hook us up, the rack is just out of stock right now.  We had lunch @chintosmexrest it was 👌. Al Pastor and Bistek Ranchero were our favorites.  We stopped @valverdewinery which is the oldest winery in Texas 1883.  Still in the same family and in the original building.  We picked up two whites to go.  We moved on to some local Texas coffee @bigbendcoffeeroasters and it is 👌. I think I fixed the bike rack with a grinder here in the maintenance shop and some 5/8” grade 8 hardware.  We also had a nice sunset.  Lake day when it clears up today.

A Little Dip

The drive over to Del Rio was pretty nice yesterday.  We also started the day with our best sunrise in Lajitas.  Deer Season appears to be in full swing in Texas Hill Country along the Mexico Border.  Somewhere between Lajitas and the Marathon area, I pulled into a picnic area to grab a snack out of the trailer and “water off.”  As I got out of the trailer I noticed our bike rack was hanging.  The locking pin snapped and the bikes were flopping around for who knows how long.   I tried to rig it in place, but no luck.  We took the bikes off, took the rack off and figured out how to Tetris them into the back of the truck with our bins.  The dogs also got to ride in the cab with us for a few hours.  They did pretty good, until the last 45 minutes or so and figured out how to get in the front seat when we got to our camp spot.  Another highlight of our drive was the largest wide load I have ever seen.  We were both headed downhill towar...

Out of Lajitas

Yesterday was our last full day down in the Lajitas/Big Bend Area.  We took the Maxwell Scenic drive to Santa Elena Canyon.  The canyon is 8 miles long, 1500’ deep and at its narrowest is 30’ wide.  Another formation is called Mules Ears.  Back in the day, the military would have their pilots fly between the ears for training.    @bigbendnps did not disappoint.  The little area of Castalon burned a few years ago, but things are getting green again.  The park is so expansive, 800,000 acres.  We will hit a few national monuments along the way now, but no national parks until the Everglades.    I took a bike ride before sunset up to the Lajitas overlook.  It was steep and I did hit a cactus on the way up (cornering) issues.  The view at the top is totally worth the time.  You go right up the Zipline Canyon.  If you zoom in, you can see the truck down at the resort.  The @konabikes Kahuna held up too, so I’m exc...
