Out of Lajitas
Yesterday was our last full day down in the Lajitas/Big Bend Area. We took the Maxwell Scenic drive to Santa Elena Canyon. The canyon is 8 miles long, 1500’ deep and at its narrowest is 30’ wide. Another formation is called Mules Ears. Back in the day, the military would have their pilots fly between the ears for training. @bigbendnps did not disappoint. The little area of Castalon burned a few years ago, but things are getting green again. The park is so expansive, 800,000 acres. We will hit a few national monuments along the way now, but no national parks until the Everglades.
I took a bike ride before sunset up to the Lajitas overlook. It was steep and I did hit a cactus on the way up (cornering) issues. The view at the top is totally worth the time. You go right up the Zipline Canyon. If you zoom in, you can see the truck down at the resort. The @konabikes Kahuna held up too, so I’m excited about that.
Today is travel, laundry and groceries.
