Another two-fer. Texas Style
Yesterday was a drive day from Van Horn to Lajitas which is a cute little border town on the Rio Grande. The drive down was nice, decent scenery along the Texas Mountain Trail. We were on the phone with a KOA trying to make reservations in Corpus Christi and I pulled over in Marfa Texas. I caught sight of the courthouse out of the corner of my eye and decided to stop. It was quintessential Texas in my mind.
To get to Big Bend NP and Big Bend Ranch State Park it’s a bit out of the way or “Off the beaten path.” There are several other cute small towns along the way. We got into the area and picked up more diesel, it was $2.99 a gallon which is the most we’ve paid in quite some time. We rolled through Teralingua which has remnants of an old ghost town mixed in with more modern structures. We are staying at Maverick Ranch RV Park which was recommended by someone we co-follow on Instagram. The RV park is part of the Lajitas Golf Resort. It was 80* and humid when we rolled in and it stayed hot well after dark. The wind picked up and was gusting to nearly 50mph and the local airport. It rocked the trailer for most of the night.
Today we took a ride up the Rio Grande on the 170 which is one of the top 10 scenic drives in the US. It follows the river on the way up to Presidio. We only went 15-20 miles up the road and got some great views. There are some tall mountains on the Mexico side of the river.
We then headed up towards Teralingua and checked out the general store. We also walked around some of the old ruins in the ghost town. We took a quick walk with the kids when we got back and then biked over to the golf resort for a drink at the Thirsty Goat. We may have also had some excellent chips and salsa.
It’s been a good two days, phone and internet are really limited down here.
