Grand Canyon, Round Two
Yesterday we got rolling pretty early and headed for the Grand Canyon. Our first trip there was about 3 years ago on Memorial Day weekend. It was hot and it was packed. It was amazing though.
We drove up and back on the 17, the 180 and the 64. The 180 is beautiful and goes through the San Francisco Mtns and through the Kaibab National Forest. There was no line to get in at the gate at the south entrance and the parking lots were only 1/4 capacity or so.
We first checked out the area to the east of the main lots and walked a few miles. We then headed down towards the main lodges where we have been before. We went in and explored the Hopi House which was very cool and then went into the the lodge to check it out. It still had Christmas decorations up and was very cool.
The amount of people in January compared to May was fantastic. We headed west along the south rim at this point and stopped at many of the overlooks. Powell’s point and Hermits rest were my favorite spots. Although, there was one overlook where you could see rapids on the Colorado and could actually hear the roar of the water. That was pretty neat too.
The drive up and back were pretty pleasant and we are glad we made the return trip.
It’s one of our birthday’s today so we are headed out for breakfast.
