Jerome AZ.
We started our day out with a beautiful sunrise. Picture was loaded yesterday. We had breakfast and some coffee before walking the dogs. The walk around the perimeter of the park loops is just shy of 5 miles...it's really big and nice. This is definitely the nicest Thousand Trails we have been at. We then got cleaned up and hit the road to explore.
Jerome AZ sits at about a mile high and overlooks the Verde Valley and beyond. It is a turn of the Century, late 1800's-early 1900's mining town. Copper was the big export, but there was a bit of silver and gold too. The mining similarities of Jerome and the Copper Country of the Upper Peninsula were evident right away. They are both built on hillsides and the mining equipment resembled that of the Houghton and Hancock area.
We went to the AZ State Park (Museum) at the old Douglas Mansion and spent about an hour looking at the exhibits. The view from outside the museum is also spectacular. We then took a ride further up into the town itself which also resembled Houghton and Hancock. In the shady areas, there was a dusting of snow. The streets are narrow and winding and everything appears to be built on the edge of a cliff. We ducked into and out of a few shops but didn't buy anything. We did decide to do a tasting at Cabal Cellars. Their wine is grown in the Wilcox area of AZ. We enjoyed the tasting, having tried a few new varieties of wine. We picked up two bottles to waive a tasting fee and then grabbed a bite to eat.
Bobby D's BBQ pit is just up the street from Cabal and we had lucked out finding a free parking spot across the street from there. The food smelled great and the menu looked good so we decided to give it a shot. We split a bacon cheeseburger with fries and apple slaw. I didn't get a picture of the food, but it was really good. The burger had a smokey taste to it and the fries had a bbq rub on them. The waitress recommended mixing Jalapeño Molasses BBQ sauce with ranch dressing as a fry dip. She hit the nail on the head...it was delicious.
After splitting our late lunch, we rolled back down the hill towards town. We hit the grocery store, snagged some more diesel for our explorations today and came back to the trailer. We got a few games of Yahtzee in and watched some KYD and LJMJ.
Overall it was a great day.
