Come and Take It.
Yesterday we rolled into downtown San Antonio to visit the Alamo. There were a few people around but not too many. The weather was breezy and in the high 30s. I walked up to the information center and was told the next guaranteed ticket was at 1pm. It was 11:30.
The guy then informed us we could get in on a “standby” line and directed us over to the sidewalk behind another couple. That only lasted about two minutes and we were allowed in. There is no photography allowed inside the Alamo so you’ll have to look it up on the ol’ google.
The Alamo is a mission or church with 4’ thick stone walls. The history of the Alamo is pretty interesting as what it was used for over the years and the people who have been through it or stayed there. We saw names of people carved into the stone doorways. Some of those names/people were killed during the Battle of the Alamo. The self guided tour in the building doesn’t take that long. The grounds are pretty big and we spent some time walking around and taking photos.
I think it’s worth a stop if you are close by.
Another “attraction” close by is the River Walk. We spent some time down there walking along the water and shops. Due to the cold temps and COVID, it was really quiet and quite a few places were closed. We had lunch at Casa Rio, the oldest restaurant on the River Walk. If you go to the River Walk, you can walk past this place.
After being downtown, we headed to the Alamo Distillery to see what it was like. It is in a partially gentrified neighborhood east of downtown. We walked in and it was like the music stopped. We were asked if we had an appointment and told them no. We were then told to go outside, call the building and ask for an appointment. This made no sense as we were already in the building so we just got in the truck and left.
We got back to the campground around 3 and took the kids for a long walk down to the lake. It was cold, but all of us needed to stretch our legs. Medina Lake appears to be about 20’ low. We wondered if it is similar to Detroit Lake and it fills over the winter.
Have I mentioned this place has a ton of deer? They are everywhere so there are a ton of deer pics today. We ended the day with about 8.5 miles of walking.
