SPITX
Yesterday we had a long drive day. 400+miles on Texas back highways. We’ve been avoiding the interstate for the most part and it’s been pretty cool. Lots of towns that you would have no idea they existed. Lots of “ghost towns” and stopover locations that are not in business anymore.
We drove by some amazing Texas ranches and it is clear that whitetail deer hunting is big business in south Texas. About 50 miles outside of Corpus Christi, everything gets pretty flat and we turned south. We were already 5 hours into the drive and were getting antsy. We made it to Port Isabel and could really smell the ocean.
We crossed the bridge to South Padre Island (saw some dolphins) and totally blew past our check in point for Cameron County Parks (mind you, I already did the extensive online registration). We waited in line at the park entrance only to be informed we needed to do a quick “youie” or u-turn with our bid truck and 25’ trailer, go back about a quarter mile near the “ice machine” and register. The registration process was a bit antiquated as I had to hand write everything I filled out online which was quite the process to begin with. There were 4 people in front of me and we got through it about an hour later.
We got into the park and got everything set up. We decided that someone would make us dinner tonight as the dogs were in a bit of a mood. I don’t think they like the long drive day either. We walked them, fed them and loaded them back into the truck. The first place we tried was called the Sea Ranch. We seemed a little under dressed and it reminded me of the John Candy movie Summer Rental. The scene where he is really sunburned and they waited for hours to get lobster only to have some rich guy come in and get the last couple of them. We also ended up eating at the barnacle.
Actually, we ended up eating at the Pier 19 restaurant. I had Blackened Mahi Tacos, I wasn’t hungry enough to eat the second Mahi. Katy had a Flounder Po Boy. The food was really good and the restaurant is right on the water. After dinner we drove back to the park and got in a little before 8 PM.
We are at the Isla Blanca county RV park. And it is in a great location at the southern end of South Padre Island
