Civil War Battlefield Site
Two days ago we drove up to Vicksburg Mississippi. We stopped at the site of the plane crash that killed part of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. We then moved on up to our Harvest Host spot, Patch of Heaven Farms. It’s a cool spot and we were here with two other couples. The farm owners and kids are great people who like to share their way of life.
Yesterday we went to the Vicksburg battlefield. The battle for Vicksburg raged for months with over 10,000 lives lost. The accuracy with which the park documents the battle is amazing. They even have the original USS Cairo with all its cannons on it. They describe how the “Brown water Navy” helped win the war. The boat is not river worthy but it is cool to see.
We would recommend the tour, it is a 16 mile drive through the park and we of course did not read every placard.
After the tour, we went into Vicksburg old town which was pretty cool, but run down a bit. Ok, run down a lot. There were some cool shops but we could not find a sticker. We did find some bad iced coffee and were able to see a hand to hand drug transaction.
We came back to the farm and did the walking tour. It was about 1.75 miles around. We saw horses, Shetland ponies, pigs, piglets and Oreo cows. They are actually called Belted Galloways. Super cute and very docile. Last night there were six harvest host members here so we had a little fire with all of them. It was great to meet so many nice people on the road.
