White Oak Pastures & Moon Pie Farm and Creamery

Yesterday became hot and muggy real quick.  I guess the temp got down to 65 overnight, but the humidity stayed around 80%.  By midday the temp was 87.  We took a 45 minute drive over to Bluffton, GA to visit a farm.

I’ve heard about White Oak Pastures for years and the work that owner Will Harris is doing in farming.  White Oak is a 6th generation farm that has been in operation for over 150 years.  It is on both sides of the highway and goes for miles.  I’m really impressed by their regenerative, carbon sequestration style of farming.  They raise their animals right and utilize everything on the animals.  They also employ a great number of people.  Mr Harris also has “internships” for people who want to know more about this type of farming.

Recently, Bill Gates was even invited to the farm by Mr Harris to learn how things are done at this type of farm.   In February, Gates said that rich nations should switch to eating synthetic meat.  This was said after reportedly buying up a bunch of farmland.   Anyway, I could continue rambling about this for a while so you should look them up if you want more information.  White Oak Pastures that is.  And the Bill Gates stuff too as I find that statement interesting and scary.

While at the general store, we purchased a few items like canned goods and pickles and some pasture raised meats.  I also picked up a book and we had lunch too.  Mr Harris was in the restaurant and was really friendly with anyone who walked up to say hello.  It was a great stop in my opinion.

We then drove a little southwest and crossed into Florida.  We’ve been taking a lot of backroads and there wasn’t a welcome sign when we crossed.  We’ve been taking pics of the welcome signs along the way so I’m not sure what we’re going to do with Florida.

We stayed at another Harvest Host last night.  Moon Pie Farm and Creamery.  The owner Liz gave us a tour and we got to see all sorts of animals.  Pigs, goats and baby goats, a giant pig and lots of birds.  We bought some mango jalapeño jelly, eggs, venison sausage and homemade cheese.

Our camping spot is away from everyone, behind the electric fence to keep the other animals out.  Maggs was not a fan of all the other animals and livestock guard dogs.  We should have taken the time to back in here, but oh well.  We pride ourselves on being pretty small so we tried to turn all the way around in here but that was an epic failure.  It was like Austin Powers in the tunnel.

We had a quick thunderstorm roll through with some heavy rain but the evening ended really nice.  We made bacon burgers and had a salad.  Off to Panama City today.
