Charleston, SC. Worth the Trip.

Yesterday we woke up to an alarm to get to Charleston for our tour.  We took two laps with the dogs and secured them in Sis for the day with the AC on.  It did get up to 88*.  The drive to Charleston was about 70 minutes of nice divided highway (Hwy 17) and country backroads.

We got into town and found 4 hours of parking for $8 right by the Custom House.  This was nice because that is where our tour started.  We were a few minutes early so we looked in on the City Market and I picked up an iced coffee.

Just before 10am, we met our tour guides, Martha and Susan with Charleston Perspective walking tours.  They can trace their Charleston roots back to the 1670’s.  The tour is 2 hours long and covers a little over a mile in the Walled City.  We saw so many interesting things with the background of them, not just looking at them.

It’s amazing to see buildings that are still intact after hundreds of years.  It really puts it into perspective how young the west is.  We walked through several alleys and Martha pointed out that there is not stone in the “low country” which means all the stone in Charleston was brought in.  Mostly by ships to weigh them down for trans Atlantic travel.  Crazy to think.  She also showed us the difference between European brick and Charleston brick.  Charleston brick is much softer and she even pointed out some fingerprints on a brick from hundreds of years ago.  (After that I kept looking for more).

We highly recommend this tour, I could go on and on about it.  You’ll receive 350 years of history in two hours.  You can’t beat that.

After the tour we walked to Fleet Landing restaurant and had lunch on the water.  The blackened triggerfish was excellent and the dolphins swimming by were a bonus.  After lunch we walked through City Market which is several blocks long and contains about 200 vendors, most of them are local.

We crossed the bridge and hit Trader Joe’s before coming home.  The dogs did great, this was their longest stay at 8 hours.  They’re getting pretty good, maybe it was the two walks...
