Education Day
Yesterday we headed over to Tybee Island. We checked out the beach even though the weather wasn’t great. We also toured the lighthouse, I went up to the top. The views were great. It was a little weird on the top as the observation deck is welded on and you could see down through it in some spots. I took a time lapse of the walk down the 150’ high spiral staircase. It turned out well, but videos still won’t load here for me. It’s on Instagram. The lighthouse keepers house was also a cool walk through history.
We also walked through a few old gun batteries that were near the beach. They had some artifacts dating back to the 1500’s, including some pirate items. I really liked seeing a Punt Gun. The shooter would have to rest it on someone else’s shoulder to fire it.
After touring Tybee, we headed for Fort Pulaski. I thought it was very similar to Fort Pickens, but it had a moat with drawbridges. The most was 38’ wide at some points and 8’ feet deep. It took about 10 years to build if I have my facts right. Millions of bricks. It’s amazing that someone thought of this design. The fort had a minimum of 385 personnel and up to 1000. Some of the cannons, namely to 42 pounders weighed 8,700lbs.
There is also a gravesite near the fort that includes 13 officers from the Immortal 600. Their story is worth the read, go ahead, look them up.
It started to rain at about 1:30 so we took a ride to downtown Savannah. The thunderstorms were so intense, we had to pull over at the post office to let it pass. Our wipers could not keep up. After the deluge, we drove back to the campground. We read, played games, watched movies and had a slow afternoon. The rain never let up, we had so many storms pass through and had tornado warnings again. This is the 9th stop in two months with bad thunderstorms. “Spring in the South”We ended up with 3” of rain in 12 hours. I think it was double that based on the size of the lake outside the trailer last night.
We also woke up to a kindness rock on our power box from art by Michele.
Off to a park in South Carolina today.
