Newport News

Yesterday we rolled down to Newport News VA and Victory Park.  Victory Park is for WWI and the monument/flame are very impressive.  We walked in the park and down to the water.  From the water you can see the James River at a very wide point of greater Chesapeake Bay.

There are also several Navy supply ships in the area, I’m assuming for re-supply or some work.  On was the Shugart, it was named after MOH recipient Randy Shugart from Delta who was KIA in Mogadishu.  The other ship of note was CVN 79, USS John F Kennedy.  Still under construction, but partially crewed, I am in awe of these floating towns.  I didn’t want to steal, so you can look them up on Wikipedia if you have further interest in learning more.

The Newport News Shipyard is huge and seems to cover miles of waterfront.  Another Wiki fact, they employ over 41,000 people at their facilities.  After this quick stop, we renewed our Costco, hit Whole Paycheck and Walmart.  We saw a rig at the Whole Foods and it was signaling the end of the pandemic.  If this was last year, people would fist fight over their cargo.  As I was taking a picture, one of them walked up and said, “that’s how we roll.”

When we got back it was too hot to walk the kids.  We started to pack up for today’s travel.  The dogs appreciated the cooling air of the fans in the trailer.
