Buffalo Trace
Not sure what happened yesterday. I had the alarm set for 6, but something got us up at 0430. I fought it and stayed in bed until 6. We had some quick breakfast, did three laps around the park with the dogs and got on the road to Frankfort at 8:10.
The ride along the Bluegrass Parkway was really nice. Not a lot of traffic and 70 speed limit. We got to Buffalo Trace Distillery National Landmark about 20 minutes early. This is the first place we were asked to show our papers or if we had proof of vaccination. We opted for the mask option. We also noted a few people who were wearing masks and later found the “vaccinated” sticker laying around and took their masks off.
On to the Col Taylor tour. Chuck was our tour guide and he did a great job. I love the smell of these distillery’s, sweet corn and bourbon evaporating from barrels for years. We saw quite a bit of the distillery and went down to the river. The old OFC building has turned into an archaeological dig which is really interesting. The building has flooded numerous times and they have the water marks on the windows/walls. We’re talking 30’ of water from yesterday’s water level.
The old barrel house was really interesting. They have 24,000 barrels in there. Those barrels start at 53 gallons a piece. Buffalo Trace produces about 1,400 barrels a day so this isn’t their only barrel house. The bottom floor of the barrel house has all the good stuff. Those barrels can lose about 2/3 of their original product. That’s why old bourbon is expensive.
After Buffalo Trace we drove to Castle and Key which was closed, but it’s a cool building and we wanted to check it out. This put us in “Kentucky Horse Country”. Talk about displays of wealth. The drive back got a little sporty. We had about 45 miles of rain and storms. 60mph winds and torrential rain. We had to slow quite a bit.
We got back and the dogs had behaved. We ended up watching a movie and hanging out inside due to the pouring rain and continued storms. After the rain, we got a walk in and made dinner. We also went to bed a little early after our getting up at 0430.
Katy woke up to Duncan eating out of the garbage at 0444. He’s never done that before. He’s now on the s#!tlist.
