Mammoth Cave Natl Park
Yesterday we walked and ran the dogs, got a workout in and hit the road. It was a 45 minute drive down to Cave City. Elizabethtown is a really good point to explore from.
We arrived at the park and immediately went to the visitor center. All of the guides cave tours are sold out until the end of July, or at least that’s what we were told. The self guided tours are first come first served starting when the park opens. We were able to get an afternoon time slot at 3:15. The tour is $8 per person and the Interagency pass doesn’t work. This is due to the fact there is no gate fee. It was only 11 so we had some time to kill. A few minutes later and everything was sold out.
We took a ride to the Dennison access to Green River thinking we would come back and paddle. Well, due to all the heavy rain, the Green River was not green. I don’t think we’ll paddle there. We did have lunch and then explored some other places in the park. It is a beautiful area.
We hit our tour at 3:15 on the dot and it only took us about 30 minutes to get in to the end and out. We covered 3/4 of a mile and there are approximately 412 miles of caves. Such a cool place and way different than Carlsbad. The Rotunda room is spectacular. The temps in the caves hover around 56-59* and you could feel the cold coming out as we neared the entrance. Last week, a weather system came in and it produced fog in the Rotunda.
We definitely recommend checking this out. We would’ve liked to check out some of the other tours, but didn’t pay enough attention to the “system” before arriving in Kentucky. Give the NPS website a look before you arrive.
