New River Gorge Bridge
Yesterday we broke out the Chuck It and ran the dogs quite a bit in the morning. It got hot fast so we took a short walk before going out to explore. I also got the generator out and ran it for a bit as it had been a while.
We stopped for fuel for the truck and generator on our way up to the bridge. It was a nice 45 minute drive north through Beckley and some other small towns. We crossed the bridge to the visitor center and Katy wasn’t too impressed with the height. It’s the 3rd highest bridge in the country at over 800’.
The walk down to the viewpoint was about 180 stairs and wasn’t too bad. Lots of people were taking breaks with the temps. The view was great and I noticed there was a road below us. We then walked up to the visitor center and looked around. We found out there is a drive down into the canyon. The drive is called Fayette Station Rd and it was an awesome 45 minute drive. We made a few stops to check things out. The bridge is a marvel of engineering and the river is awesome. There were a bunch of rafters in the water. We watched one kayaker run the rapids. It’s a little too much for our boats.
Speaking of our boats we put them in the water at Little Beaver State Park and did a paddle it was 1 mile around the lake. After our paddle, we came back to the campsite and started to pack for our drive. We walked the dogs again at dark and overall it was a great day. I also remembered to secure the dog food and griddle as we had been visited by a Trash Panda 🦝 the night before. Maggie was not impressed with it and it wasn’t really afraid of me.
