New River Gorge
Yesterday we slow rolled our morning and walked the dogs a few miles. We got our stuff together and were going to paddle the small lake in the park. As I was untying the first kayak, Katy spotted a sign that said “no private watercraft”.
I secured the 550 cord and we tried plan b, which was drive to cell service and see where to go. The next closest lake for a paddle was about 40 minutes away. We were still a little confused about the lake at the campground so we called the park office and they told us we could paddle and that those rules had been changed.
Since we were already out of the park I said let’s drive to Grandview and turn around. I assumed it was a town and was surprised that it was a section of the New River Gorge National River. We stopped in the visitor center and spoke with the volunteers. They have been on the road traveling for 10 years and volunteering as they go. They were really nice and we received a few pointers from them.
We walked to the main overlook and then to the north overlook. The views are spectacular and would be amazing in the fall. We also took a ride up to Turkey Spur and did the hike to the top. Turkey Spur is not easily accessible as there are quite a few stairs. The other spots are pretty flat with a well kept trail. This is an easy stop just 5 miles from the I-64. Turkey Spur is not trailer friendly but the main area has tons of room for parking.
We came back and did a bunch of meal prep in the shade. We chatted with our neighbors from South Carolina and may do a happy hour with them before we leave.
