Calumet Trail? Pass…
Yesterday we had our normal morning routine. We then went grocery shopping at our first Meijer. We must be getting old because we were excited that it is a really nice store. The lady in front of us at the checkout couldn’t have used Tetris magic to fit another item, in, on or under her cart. Much to my surprise, her bill was $288 and she told the cashier it was a month worth of food. Maybe the wrong kind of food. Most of it likely has the shelf life of an MRE.
We got out of the store and headed into Michigan City for a quick detour. The waterfront area and marina are nice. We had a quick bite to eat at the camper and got on our bikes for a ride on the Calumet Trail.
The Calumet Trail is listed in the NPS guide and is a “historic” trail. Well, it’s a gravel two track along the train tracks and two power lines. There were some pretty wildflowers, but other than that, we’d pass on it. We decided to turn around before the state park and take the truck down there. The road was flooded in several spots and the waters been there long enough that frogs and tadpoles live in some of them. If I was the NPS, I’d fix the road or take it off their fliers.
After our ride, we drove to Indiana Dunes SP and spent some time on the beach. It was a nice beach and there were still a lot of people for a Monday. The campground was also really nice. Not a lot of shade, but most sites had electric and its in a good location.
