Gettysburg PA
Yesterday we had our usual morning routine, coffee, workout, walk the dogs and headed for town. I had downloaded Action Tour Guide to my phone and paid $6.99 for the Gettysburg Battlefield self guided tour.
Honestly, I should have explored the app a little more, but it worked great when we found the starting point. For those of you who may try this, the starting point is behind the Gettysburg Heritage Center. Don’t plug your phone into Apple Car Play, that’s where I went wrong. If you have something to hold your phone up on the dash, that would be a bonus too. Not necessary, just convenient.
It took us about 3 hours to do the tour with the stops. It can be longer if you step off on the several 30 minute walking tours. We got out multiple times, but didn’t take long walking tours, it was 100*. The battle took place July 1-3, 1863 and it was reported as being really warm then too.
The tour takes you all over the place and goes through the battle day by day. The tour is very well thought out and we liked going at our pace. The area near Roundtop and the valley below was the most impactful for me. It would not be a place I’d ever try to run up in daylight while being shot at. There were also sharpshooters back in the day who were consistently accurate beyond 500 yards. It was said that Berdan and some of his boys were good out to 1,000. This was 160 years ago. Hard to wrap your head around that.
It’s also difficult to imagine 50,000+ casualties in 3 days on our own soil and against each other. The tour ends at the cemetery where President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. I did a bit of walking here. The grounds are immaculate and it is a nice spot to end the tour.
After our tour we had lunch at the Blue & Gray Bar and Grill. It’s with the stop. The Old Bay Wings were good. We then had to get some diesel and received some sticker shock. $87 for almost 24.9 gallons. The same amount of fuel last week in Virginia was $73.50. Must be higher fuel tax in PA. We’ve been using gas buddy, and there was some fuel for $3.19 about 15 miles away as the crow flies, but we didn’t take the winding drive of 20 miles to go get it.
