3 Days in the UP
Monday we did some shopping, ran the dogs and relaxed around the trailer and camp. We made a big family breakfast and smash burgers for dinner. The smoke started to roll in to the point that we couldn’t watch the sunset. It was pretty thick. One of my classmates stopped by to say bye to Wendy and the girls. It was fun to see what he’s been up to since we graduated.
Tuesday we loaded up pretty early on the 22’ Polaris General XP and did a huge tour of the area. We rode into town and picked up my mom so she could spend the day with us. Here are a few highlights of the day. 10.5 hours, 167 miles, 8.7 gallons of fuel. We stopped at Silver Falls, the trestle, high bank, Quartzite Falls, had lunch at Mt Arvon. We then came back and let the dogs out. After lunch we hit 40’ falls, Leatherby Falls, The Love Seat, the mouth of the Huron, The million dollar bridge and Erick’s Falls. I feel I may have missed a stop in there. We also picked a ton of berries, or ate a ton of berries on the backroads. Tim and I swam at the mouth, the water was nice. It was a bit smokey, but a great day.
Yesterday we cooked a big breakfast on the Blackstone before heading out with the boat. Tim’s brother and parents came with us. We got on the water at Skanee park and headed for the eagles nest. There were several juveniles around the nest but we didn’t see any adults. From there it was off to the Huron Islands. We got docked and I hiked up to the top with Whitey. The view was awesome, even through the haze. The next stop was the mouth of the Little Huron. Tim and I swam and there were fish “rolling” all over the surface. We couldn’t figure out what they were though. The water was a little cooler and the fish flies were bad so we left. The mouth of the big Huron wasn’t any better with the flies so we backed out and left right away. As we were pulling back, I noticed and iPhone in the water. It was mine from when I jumped out to pull the boat in. Lucky it’s waterproof. We stopped and had a picnic at what was once called nude beach and then slowly made our way back in. It was an awesome day on the water. We cleaned the boat and then my sister came out with my niece and nephew to visit. Tim and I also swam at camp. The water was great.
