Maid of The Mist

Yesterday we met our host (Jim) up at the trailer.  He grew up in the house he currently lives in.  His dad built it right after WWII.  He left for 40 years, but came back to it.  He and his wife travel in a Class A, but also have a place in FL for the winter.  Really nice guy who uses Harvest Host and Boondockers Welcome.

Jim recommended getting Buffalo Wings, they originated at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo.  The original recipe is Frank’s and butter with blue cheese.  He also told us about other local staples.  Doughnuts with peanuts on them which we didn’t try and then Beef on Weck.  We had no clue what Beef on Weck was, but we went to the place he recommended to try it.  Adrians was just up the road from where we are staying.  Beef on Weck is slow roasted beef, finished in and Au Jus.  It’s then put on a Weck roll.  The roll has sea salt and caraway seeds.  Anyway, it was really good.

After our early lunch we headed for Niagara Falls again.  We got tickets for the Maid of the Mist and headed up the observation deck.  It is over 200’ above the water and is an impressive view.  We took the elevator down and got our blue ponchos.  On a side note, mine did not work well.  The boat ride is about 20 minutes and it was amazing.  A must do.  The falls create wind and it makes you feel like you are in a storm.  It’s so impressive.  Katy sat with a gentleman who was visiting the falls on his 84th birthday.  He and his wife have traveled all over.

After the falls, we took a drive up to Fort Niagara which is on Lake Ontario.  I’ve now officially been in all 5 Great Lakes.  We could see Toronto on the other side, but there were a few storms coming across the lake.  It was $14pp to tour the fort so we passed on that.  We drove the river down to Lewiston NY and toured the town based on recommendations.  It was really cute and we stopped for wings at the Brickyard.  They were really good so we bought some of their rub.  We tried to stop at the Peach Festival, but it didn’t open for another hour. We walked a lap and then drove back to the camper.  The dogs had weathered a few storms while we were gone and Maggie tuned up a Pendleton blanket for comfort.
