Monroe, MI. (South of Detroit)

We’ve spent the last few days south of Detroit at Sterling State Park.  Based on recommendations from a couple we met in Marquette, we took the M23 on our way down here.  It took almost 7 hours vs 5 hours, but the view along the lake was nice.  We stopped for diesel twice.  On a side note, we’ve been getting a ton of compliments on Lola.  A guy at the gas station asked me if I liked the truck.  We chatted a bit and he asked if it was new.  I told him it is 4 years old and he said, “beautiful truck, not exposed to salt.”

We got to the park and filled our fresh tank.  Our site is a back in, electric only and backs up to the woods.  The park is nice and is well kept.  It’s right on Lake Erie, which is really warm.  One more lake to go and I’ll have been in all 5 Great Lakes.  The beach has a bunch or crushed up mussels on it in spots.

Our first full day was spent driving down to Toledo.  Costco and Whole Foods run.  When we got back, we unpacked, walked the dogs for a second time and headed out to get through 4 loads of laundry.  I also washed the truck.  Yesterday we explored Monroe and took a ride over to Dundee to visit St Julian Winery.  Monroe is pretty  closed up.  Lots of businesses are shut down.  Lots for sale and rent, it’s sad.

St Julian was a nice stop.  We thought we were going to the actual winery, but turned out that we were just going to a tasting room.  The wine was good and we ended up leaving with two bottles of red.  We hadn’t wine tasted since Ludington.  Across the street was Cabelas.  I remember when it first opened, it was the largest Cabelas in the country.  A few of us made the 8 hour road trip from the Yoop to visit it.  We wandered around for a little bit and came out with some essentials.  Three bags of Black Rifle Coffee.  Two are some of our old standbys and one new one that I’m excited about.

We took a bike ride around the park after we got back.  The parks trail system could definitely use some maintenance as the trails are like a cobblestone path.  Overall it’s been a few good days.
