Back to TX, another 4 state day

Image
Yesterday we left Lillian AL right at about 10am and headed for San Antonio.  Spoiler alert, we didn’t make it all the way. We had decided to go about 1/2 way which was just beyond Lake Charles LA.  A lot of places were booked up as far as HH or BW spots so we decided Cracker Barrel would be our landing spot.   Based on the parking lot stay, we decided to go longer and wound up west of Beaumont TX.  It was a day of traveling firsts.  We towed in the dark, we stayed at a Cracker Barrel and I witnessed a blowout on a car in front of us and had to swerve around some debris.  The driver appeared fine, the front end of their car, not so much.   We landed at Cracker Barrel at about 6:30 and fed the kids.  We ordered dinner which ended up being wrong and a bit cold.  Thankful for the well lit parking spot though.  It is a nice flat lot and I think there were 7 rigs total when waking up this morning.   On to San Antonio today.  Hopeful...

Ala Bama

I’m going to work this one backwards.  We are in Lillian Alabama and had planned to be in Panama City.  We both came down with colds in the past few days and haven’t done a whole lot.  I went to Perdido Key on Christmas Day while Katy hung out at the rig.  Yesterday I was down pretty much all day.   Perdido was a nice beach and was pretty quiet on Christmas Day.  I also tried to get to the Pensacola Lighthouse.  From the west, I made it to the NAS Pensacola gate and decided it was a no-go.  I then rode around the east side of the town and saw a sign for the light.  I pointed the rig in that direction, crossed a bridge and wound up at the NAS gate.  We had a nice conversation about me being lost and I was escorted off the base…oops.   On 12/24, we had stayed at a Boondockers Welcome host.  They greeted us with good conversation and a stack of brownies on the 23rd.  They just bought a house in the UP.  When we left, the...

The First City

Yesterday we explored The First City, St Augustine which was founded in 1565.  We started the day with a long walk for the kids.  We then took the short drive over to the St Augustine Lighthouse.   The lighthouse, grounds and museum are $14.95 for adults and in our opinion worth the price of admission.  The whole area was decorated nice for Christmas.  There was a cool wood boat building exhibit and they raffle off the finished products.  I climbed the light which has become a thing for me on this trip.  The views were great.  If I heard the volunteer correctly the light is the 3rd tallest on the east coast.   After the light, we headed into town.  It was a bit of a zoo being that it’s so close to the holidays.  We parked near the Florida National Guard Headquarters.  The grounds and cemetery are immaculate.  We walked all over town and checked out the architecture, streets and alleyways.  We split a pretzel with beer...
