The First City
Yesterday we explored The First City, St Augustine which was founded in 1565. We started the day with a long walk for the kids. We then took the short drive over to the St Augustine Lighthouse.
The lighthouse, grounds and museum are $14.95 for adults and in our opinion worth the price of admission. The whole area was decorated nice for Christmas. There was a cool wood boat building exhibit and they raffle off the finished products. I climbed the light which has become a thing for me on this trip. The views were great. If I heard the volunteer correctly the light is the 3rd tallest on the east coast.
After the light, we headed into town. It was a bit of a zoo being that it’s so close to the holidays. We parked near the Florida National Guard Headquarters. The grounds and cemetery are immaculate. We walked all over town and checked out the architecture, streets and alleyways. We split a pretzel with beer cheese from Ben’s, it was really good. After exploring for a few hours we went back to let the kids out and regroup for Nights of Lights.
We headed back into St Augustine a little after 6. If we thought it was a zoo in the afternoon, I don’t know how to describe how busy it was with the Christmas lights on. It was beautiful though and there were lots of people (mostly on tours) singing Christmas carols. It was a very positive experience in that aspect. We enjoyed the lights and stopped at a bistro for wine and tapas. We landed a spot on the second floor balcony and had a great time people watching.
After dinner, we checked out the lights a little more and then retreated to the park. We hung out with the kids and watched a few movies. Overall it was a great day and we’d love to see the city during some downtime.
