Boondocking with Pups

We spent two nights down by St Pete at the Maximo boat ramp.  Our first night we got in at about 4:40 and found a long parking spot right away.  The sunset was nice and there were 3 other campers over by the beach for the night.

Sunday we went to the grocery store and it got pretty hot.  We came back to the park and our previous parking spot was taken.  A park worker brought us to a grassy area and we hung out at the beach for the day.  It was nice to sit and relax by the water with a little picnic.  We again watched the sunset and then took the dogs for a walk.  Our spot opened up again and we parked for the evening.  The park was really quiet for the most part.  St Pete PD patrols through there often and on the first night there was a bit of commotion from someone having a breakdown or drug induced breakdown.  I think it was the latter.  We felt safe though.

Yesterday we headed over to Fort DeSoto park which was cool and if you’re in the area, you should visit.  The beaches are nice and there was a ton of parking because the kids are still in school before Christmas break.  We parked the dogs on the backside of the north lot, put them in the trailer with the fans on and took a walk.  It was only 72*.

We walked the beach for about an hour and came back to the rig.  We hadn’t put Duncan in his kennel which we had been doing for the past few weeks.  He did great and we rewarded him with a cookie.  We then went to the Fort and parked the trailer in the shade.  I put some items on the bed to deter a mess and we went for a 30-45 minute walk.  We checked out the fort and the fishing pier.  This is another cool area and a must stop.  Upon our return, Duncan had got back “to work” by nesting by my pillows and digging a hole through the sheets on my side of the bed.  Not sure what’s up, this has only started since FL.  We thought it was the acorns hitting the roof at our last spot.

Anyway, we drove down to FT Meyers and stayed in a church parking lot last night.  They were very welcoming and it is a safe area two miles from I75.  We would stay again.  FL is still pretty warm this time of year and a lot of the beaches are not dog friendly.  We are finding it is hard to Boondock with dogs as we can’t leave them in the trailer when it’s 85* and we can’t turn the AC on.  It may be time to head a little further north where the fans can make a difference in the rig when it’s not plugged in.
