47 States
Monday we slowly rolled into Fort Worth and had our tire replaced for free by Discount Tire. They were really busy and it was a bit of a zoo, but we were happy to get back on the road safely. We had a 3 hour drive up to our 47th state.
As we crossed the Red River valley, Oklahoma looked just like both of us had imagined. If you were on a 50’ high hill, I think you could see 50 miles. It was starting to cloud up but we could see the Wichita Mountains to the north. We rolled into Doris Campground in the wildlife refuge which has no cell service and learned that we needed to make reservations prior to getting up here.
We drove through the campground and picked out a few spots. When driving out to find cell service, our attempts to call were dropped or came up as call failed. We found service about 8 miles from the campground and were able to make a reservation. We got back to the park and into our spot as it began to storm. We played cards, made dinner and left the trailer hooked to the truck all night.
Yesterday we unhooked, leveled the trailer and explored the refuge. We saw wild cows, bison, deer and prairie dogs. The landscape here is really cool and unexpected. If you come to Oklahoma it’s worth a visit. Besides checking out the park, we headed east to Mt Scott, the Holy City and Medicine Park.
The view from Mt Scott is really nice, the Holy City is unique and Medicine Park is a cute town. We tried to get onto Fort Sill to see the artillery museum and Geronimo’s gravesite but I didn’t have Katy’s ID with me. The guard at the gate was really nice. We asked about going to Lawton to check it out and he recommended that we didn’t do that unless we were armed. Based on that, we came back to the park and hung out. Some of the reviews of this park say there is a lot of jet noise and explosions from the Fort, but we don’t think it’s that bad. It was unique on the drive in here there are signs saying artillery flies over the roadway so you should keep moving.
