Farther than planned

Yesterday we rolled out a little after 10 and headed to Little Big Horn.  The Little Big Horn River was also known as the Greasy Grass river by the Native Americans who were living in the area.  For those who don’t know, this is the location of the infamous battle between Custer and several area tribes led by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull.

The battlefield stretches several miles and is dotted with headstones where people from both sides fell.  The highest concentration is at the top of the hill by the visitor center.  The location of Custers last stand.  There is a ton to say about this area and battle.  The feeling one gets here is deep and causes a person to reflect.  We didn’t know for sure if we would be coming here on this trip but I’ve listened to multiple podcasts and books talking about the battle lately.  I think the whole time period and treatment of people on both sides is a black eye in our history.  I’ll leave it at that and we will be visiting this place again for the audio tour.

We stopped at the Custer Trading Post and we split a Fry Bread Taco or Indian Taco.  It was good and filling.  We continued north and west to Billings with an overnight at a Harvest Host in Greycliff.  The drive from Sheridan up here was really nice.  Not a lot of traffic and some great views.  We saw deer, antelope, prairie dogs and a wolf.

In Laurel, just west of Billings we saw there were winter storm warnings for all of the mountain passes in Montana starting Thursday.  With this in mind, we canceled our Harvest Host stay last minute and pushed all the way to Butte.  Coming over the first pass into Bozeman we had a little bit of snow, nothing sticking though.  The last pass into Butte was bad for visibility.  Heavy snow and fog but nothing sticking to the road.  The sides of the road had snow and we were down to 25mph.

We rolled into Butte with clear skies and cold mountain air.  The KOA is pretty quiet, there were only about 5 rigs including us.  We went to make dinner and our recently purchased salad was bad and our loaf of Amish bread was moldy.  Leftover brats and a chopped veggie salad turned out OK.  After a drive day that was 3 hours longer than planned, it was hard not to call in a pizza.
