Swedes and Czechs
Yesterday we left Lawrence and headed west through the Flint Hills. It’s a pretty area, but it was raining and a good part of it had burned. We drove past Fort Riley and all of its Blackhawk and Chinooks and continues to Salina.
In Salina we headed south to Lindsborg which is the Swedish Capitol of Kansas. Here the Swedes and Mennonites started a grain mill. We toured the mill and learned about the great migration or Emigration due to the famine in the 1800’s. The mill and museum area were pretty cool to check out. The town also has a bunch of decorative red horses. It appears to be a Swedish thing.
After Lindsborg, we drove to Wilson which was heavily settled by people from Czechoslovakia. The town appears to be making a comeback and there are programs in town for free land if you decide to move there. We did not know it was a “thing” but there are decorative Czech eggs in town that are cool to look at.
We drove a loop through Wilson, fueled up and then headed for Atlas Ad Astra. This was our Harvest Host for the night. It is a decommissioned nuclear missile launch site. We met the owners and another couple who were camping too. We had a tour of the beautiful property and of the old silo and quarters. It is worth a stop if you’re in the area of Wilson.
