There’s No Place Like Home
Yesterday we took a trip over to Wamego KS. This is the home of The Wizard of Oz. It was a nice drive over on some backroads, connecting a bunch of cute little towns. Towns where the police stations appear to be houses or one room buildings.
Downtown Wamego is really cute, the area has a lot of Oz themed signage, businesses and attractions. The museum is really well done and was $10 per adult. There are quite a few neat artifacts and memorabilia. There are also a few informative videos along the walk. I think it took us maybe a 1/2 hour to get through. The young lady working at the museum recommended Oz winery down the street. If you know us, we occasionally drink some wine so we took a walk down there.
Oz Winery is one ish block south of the museum so we decided to check it out. The wines are mostly made from Kansas grapes. We split a dry flight and enjoyed conversations with the worker who is originally a troll from lower Michigan. A retired couple, Bev and Jim from Minnesota also came in. They are towing their RV to Texas and wine tasting along the way. We shared a few locations and enjoyed our chat with them too.
After the land of Oz, we stopped at a few shops on our way back east. One was a meat shop and the other a small town marketplace. We made a pit stop at the state capitol in Topeka too. It is a really nice building with immaculate grounds. The town of Topeka is a lot quieter than both of us expected. There is a lot for sale and looks like it may be on the comeback.
Back in Lawrence, we went to Lawrence Beer Co based off a friend’s recommendation. He grew up here and his friend owns the place. The Lectric IPA was good as was the raspberry hard seltzer. The pretzel was also really good. Definitely worth a stop.
