More Small Town Livin

I feel like we have done quite a bit in the past two weeks.  We’ve done a few bike rides, finally paddled Flathead Lake and explored more small towns.  The park has been busy and we’ve met some really nice travelers.  Some are doing what we did and are planning on work camping after a year of travel.  We also had 3 days of thunderstorms with the weekend heat.  One day we had a good amount of hail.  We only lost one sheet due to the dogs freaking out.

The 4th of July was great here.  The fireworks display on 7/2 was rather impressive for a small town and the parade on the 4th was great.  It reminded me of the Baraga parade as a kid.  We met some really nice people who moved here to ranch, sold the ranch and bought a place overlooking the lake.  They gave us their address and invited us over.  We haven’t taken them up yet, but may do so before we leave.  He makes wooden canoes and kayaks and I’ve always wanted to do that.

We’ve spent some time up in Kalispell and biked a bit up there on the Historic Rail Trail.  It was in great condition, but followed the highway for too long.  The traffic at 65-70 was loud.  On that trip we stopped at Tamarack Brewery and had a 1/2 order of nachos.  I think it could feed 4 people, we didn’t finish.

This week we headed out to Hot Springs and checked it out.  Not much open on a Sunday.  We stopped and had sloppy joes at The Montana Bar and then had a beer at the Beer Parlor.  We highly recommend the Parlor.  We also stopped in Lone Pine and at the Page Bison Farm.  The Bison steak was good and we have a pack of burger for crockpot chili.

Yesterday we paddled for the first time.  Hard to believe we’ve been on this beautiful lake for months and haven’t been out until now.  Time to maximize our evenings.  Today I bike a bit over 29 miles at my fastest 40k pace.  I think I’m ready for The Sun road.  Fingers crossed we get a pass for the park on Sunday…. 42 mile round trip, 3,500’ elevation gain.
