Winds on the Plains

Friday we drove across SD, caught a small sliver of MN and then stayed in Iowa for the night.  The winds driving across SD gusted to 50 according to NOAA.  It was a little sporty at times and we are glad we’re not pulling a 13’ high rig.

We stayed at an antique air park.  The owner Jim was very nice and showed me his old cars and airplanes.  He has a 46’ Taylorcraft that he has flown to all of the lower 48 states and was recently in NYC with it.  He showed me pictures of flying right down the Hudson past lower Manhattan.  So cool.  The plane has zero electronics except for an iPad that has navigation.  To start the plane you use two hands to spin the prop.  Just wow.

Yesterday we drove south from Sioux Falls after checking out the local farmers market.  The sunrise was also pretty impressive and I went out in shorts in 26* weather to get a few shots of it.  We had a coffee and breakfast pizza, bought a pumpkin for our table and picked up a few other essentials.  It was a great stop and the falls are a neat thing to check out.  They are all in the same park.

The drive south was pretty easy and the colors were at peak in some areas.  The 29 was not too busy.  We got taken for a ride by Google Maps again.  Instead of staying on the interstate we ended up driving through Omaha which was kinda meh.  I think it would’ve been easier to just stay on the interstate.

We stayed at Kimmel Orchards in Nebraska City.  This was a great stop and we loaded up on lots of canned goods and sauces.  We did a wine and cider tasting and may have walked away with a few pints.  This was a busier Harvest Host location with four other rigs staying the night.  Two of them chose to run their generators over night and two of them didn’t arrive when the farm was open.  Not sure why, but that ticks me off.  Go stay somewhere else…
