Keys Bound
Wednesday we started our way further south. We made our first stop at the Melbourne Costco which we highly recommend for RVers, plenty of parking and close to I95. We picked up some essentials for two weeks in the keys, had lunch in the parking lot and got back on the road. It started to rain pretty hard the further we got south and it turned out two hour ride into a little over 3.
We stayed at a Harvest Host Farm that we have been to before. This was our third stop at Bedner’s and another great stay. They have a ton of fresh produce, local meats and other staples at great prices. It was raining heavily so we didn’t hang out much after shopping. We left pretty early on Thursday morning at the radio advised some parts of the greater Miami area received 25” of rain in two days. We witnessed some of the localized flooding from the Turnpike. It did look like it was receding fairly quickly.
The drive to the keys was pretty easy and we got set up at the campground. We were told we missed the winter crowds by a week or two. It’s nice here and pretty quiet. There is a restaurant, marina and nice beach area. We’ve paddled, swam in the ocean, taken lots of walks and are looking forward to fishing. We’ve also met some nice couples from Michigan and Maryland.
Yesterday we tried to attend the Southernmost Air Spectacular at NAS Key West. The drive should have been an hour and twenty minutes. After two and a half hours we made it on base and it was 93* with no shade in sight. We opted to leave base and found a restaurant just off base on the north end of the runway. We were able to see F18s, an F35, the Sundowners and the Blue Angels. Overall it was a good day and we didn’t have to fight traffic coming off base.
The sunrises and sunsets here have been pretty nice too. The other night, we saw a stingray being chased by a Barracuda and it jumped 4-5’ out of the water. You don’t see that everyday.
