Biloxi Miss
Last Friday we left Gulf Shores for the state of Mississippi. We didn’t go the traditional route which goes up around Mobile Bay. Nope. Let’s put everything we own on a boat and cut a few miles off the trip. We made it over to Ft Morgan to catch the Ferry to Dauphin Island and thought we would have to wait for the next boat. However, the captain and crew worked some magic and got us on.
It doesn’t seem like a big deal but it was a strange feeling when we rolled our house onto a boat. The ride across took about 40 minutes and provided a pretty cool perspective and experience. It also saved us some miles and diesel. Probably not $47 worth of diesel, but it’s about the experience. After landing, we made our way along the low country of AL and into MS. We drove through Bayou La Battre, the shrimping capital of the world according to Bubba and Forrest. The town has a history of being battered by hurricanes and it shows a bit.
Our home for the next 4 nights was Davis Bayou Campground along the National Seashore. It was a nice park with a good amount of biking right from our site. Our longest ride was 17 miles and took us to the Biloxi sign. The ride across the bay bridge was really nice.
Some of our highlights for the stay were driving to Gulfport, Katy winning $20 at the Golden Nugget, Mahi tacos at Shaggys on the Gulf and breakfast at Blue Dog in Ocean Springs. If we ever come back this way, I think we’ll bike more along the coast between Biloxi and Gulfport.
We left Biloxi yesterday and are working our way north and west. Texas or bust by Saturday.
