Hattiesburg to Texas
We spent three nights at Paul Johnson State Park south of Hattiesburg MS. It was a quick drive up and we had the park to ourselves for the most part for the first two nights. We walked the dogs quite a bit and threw the ball for Duncan. Maggie tweaked a front leg down in Biloxi and has been moving a little slow so just walks for her. We had a lake view and quite a bit of waterfowl, Canada geese and Heinz 57 ducks.
We had a great bike ride on the Longleaf Trace. The trail is an old railroad grade and stretches 44 miles one way. We did a 32 mile round trip. We stopped for lunch at Fajitas in Sumrall and really enjoyed our street tacos. It’s definitely worth a stop if you find yourself there. Thursday we
Went to the farmers market in town and picked up a few things to include homemade honey butter…so good. After the market we stopped at Southern Prohibition Brewing and played some cribbage at the bar while we had a flight and a few drinks. The pretzel was frozen but OK, the pot roast melt was great. Katy liked their beer and I enjoyed the seltzer.
Friday we rolled further north and west. We had lunch at HD Gibbes and Sons in Learned MS. We didn’t realize, but we stayed a few miles down the road in 2021. The burger was great and again worth the stop if you’re near Vicksburg MS. They also serve 600-900 dinners each weekend. We stayed the night in West Monroe Louisiana at Landry Vineyards. This was a nice Harvest Host stop where we linked up with a family we hadn’t met before. We are looking forward to seeing their travels and traded a few spots we’ve been. There was also a couple there who are attending school with me.
Yesterday we drove over to Texas and I have to say Interstate 20 in MS and Louisiana may be the worst interstate we’ve been on. Down to 45mph and hoping the trailer doesn’t fall off. Anyway, we made it safely to Athens and school starts tomorrow. We did a little wine tasting today and then read about several fallen soldiers from the past. Remember the fallen this weekend, they are the reason we get to do what we do on a daily basis.
