Beets, beets and more beets.
After 6 ish weeks in Mackinaw City we have moved to the “thumb” for the Beet Harvest. We’ve been here a week now. Looking back on our time in MC it really flew by. We did a lot of exploring from MC, Mack Island, Rogers City, Harbor Springs and Petoskey. We visited breweries, wineries, distilleries, farms and restaurants. We did a lot of bike riding a driving.
The tunnel of trees is a great drive from Cross Village to Harbor Springs. The colors weren’t at peak for this tour, but they were getting close. We found that MC and Mack Island were pretty expensive. If you head a few miles out of town it gets quite a bit cheaper.
Work at the KOA was fun and we had a great crew and supervisors. My business really picked up in the area and I had several jobs a week. We met some of the greatest people who needed help and were grateful for it. One person brought me a block of fudge from the island, another couple brought us wine, dog treats for the kids and homemade canned applesauce. Others gave tips…who knew. Certainly not expected, but greatly appreciated. The funniest call I had was from a couple in St Ignace. The truck was in the shop so I couldn’t get to them. I told them I had the right tools, but no transportation. The wife got in her Jeep and came to pick me up in MC. She was also freaked out by driving across the Mackinaw Bridge so she had me drive her Wrangler…having just met me 15 seconds earlier. Long story short, I drove her Jeep across the bridge twice and got their Class A back on the road.
We would definitely go back to the MC area, but it could be a while. We also accepted positions in Alaska for next summer, we have to be up there the first week of May. We are excited for our long journey and being that far out with the trailer.
As for the Beet Harvest, we are just getting rolling with cooler temps. More to follow soon.
