No more beetings.
We finished up harvest on our Sunday shifts. The harvest continues and they are at 90% give or take as of this morning. On Sunday the powers that be let a bunch of people go and then asked for volunteers to be done early and still get their bonus. Katy and I volunteered, this was the hardest work I’ve done for the money. I am still sore from overwork on our super piler, most shifts I would walk 8-10 miles and push/pull a ton of beets.
Overall the experience in Sebewaing was very interesting and we met some great people. We had some warm weather shutdowns, cold weather shutdowns and lightning shutdowns. On two days of our warm weather shutdowns, we went out and explored. Michigan Sugar would have given us 4 hours each day to come in and stand around. We decided to pass. We explored Frankenmuth, Saginaw and hit up Costco in Midland.
We have a new appreciation for the farming process as many of the local farms produce beans, corn and beets. All of these crops are harvested in the fall so it is a balance to get it all in before deer season. We would have liked to tour the sugar production facility but that was not an option. I’m curious how they take a beet and turn it into Snow White sugar or molasses. The amount of beets in Sebewaing is staggering. There are 13 pilers, we were on 8. Our pile is 150’ wide, 2000’ish long and 28’ high for half of it. The other half is 18’ high. I’ll be curious to see what the total tonnage is in the next week.
We’ve been asked if we would come back for another harvest and I think we’ll both say no to Michigan Sugar. We have acquaintances who’ve worked MN and ND and it seems their experience overall has been better than ours. If you have any questions, contact us direct.
Yesterday we hit the road on our way to Lippert in Indiana. We are making a short stay in Grand Rapids as neither of us has been here before. We made some stops at Costco, Trader Joe’s and Whole Paycheck.
