It’s the end of the year as we know it.
Hard to believe it’s 123123. We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year. We have a fire going and ribs on the smoker. It’s been a day of reflection on the past year, the places we’ve been and the things we’ve experienced. Quite a year. We are looking forward to new adventures in 2024 and will be spending our next three months in Gulf Shores Alabama. I’m sure time will fly, 4/1 will be here before we know it and the Alaska adventure will start.
We spent two weeks In Yemassee SC which is a great basecamp for exploring the area. I had a few jobs in the park, two I had to back away from and didn’t charge the folks, the other was an awning issue and a roller shade I was able to fix. The rig owner was cool and helped quite a bit so I was able to pass on a discount to them. They just started full timing in August.
The TT in Yemassee was definitely better this go round. Our site was way better, the park has really been cleaned up and we met a nice family. Some of their friends are actually going to be working with us in Fairbanks. They’ll also be making a trip up to AK. There is also a KOA close to the TT and they have pizza and a wine bar. We may have been there a time or three.
This trip we skipped on heading into Charleston, but it is close (1hr) for reference. We did explore Beaufort quite a bit along with Port Royal. There are cute shops, nice brewery, good restaurants and military aircraft. The F35s and F18s were out just about every day. I was also able to help with Operation Holiday Heroes at the Salvation Army. Thanks to the generous donations from the surrounding area, 1,100 kids were able to celebrate Christmas. It was heartwarming to talk with the parents as they came in to receive their kids packages.
We also made a return visit to Savannah GA. This was our second trip and I like the city even more. We did a trolley tour where you can get off and back on wherever you want. Our suggestion is buy your tix online early for the cost savings and then do the whole tour right off the bat. Then get off where you want to explore. We’ll definitely be back, it’s also a pretty walkable city to explore.
After Savannah we had a whirlwind visit to Jacksonville to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra which was awesome. Maggie had a quick vet visit and we had a not cheap visit to Costco. On Christmas Eve we drove to Mexico Beach to our favorite park, Old Salt. This was our third visit there. We hit the pet friendly beach every day and went to Port St Joe, Cape San Blas and Appalachicola exploring. I think if the price was right, we’d get some RV property in the area.
Since arriving in the Pensacola, Orange Beach, Gulf Shores area it’s been unseasonably cool. I went on base at NAS Pensacola and visited the National Naval Aviation Museum. What a display of aircraft all the way back to the beginning and space flight. This is definitely a must if you’re in the area and love flight. The base was busy so I’ll have to go back for the lighthouse another time. It’s here, I have to climb it. We also dropped my bike off at the shop for a new crank, apparently they have been breaking and it’s a recall. We are off to Gulf State Park tomorrow.
