Liard to Teslin-Yukon Territory
Thursday we got up to rain and cold temps, just above freezing. We had coffee and breakfast and got on the road. With 3/4 of a tank I decided to top off at Liard Hot Springs Lodge. It was $2.25 a liter and there are 3.78 liters in a gallon. I’m glad we weren’t at a 1/4 tank.
We ran into some other RVers who had come through Muncho Lake and said there was 8-12” of snow on the pass. Glad we made the drive Wednesday. As we drove north, the clouds parted and the Woodland Bison were out in full force. The smallest group was two and the biggest was about 20 and some of the groups had fresh babies. There was a pretty fresh Bison kill along side the highway and there was a big male Gray Wolf on it. We spun around and went back to check it out. He had left the carcass and was trotting along the ditch when we got back to him. We also saw a moose and two Bald Eagles, one of them had a big fish near Teslin. I forgot to mention, we made it to the Yukon Territory and crossed the 60th parallel.
The Watson Lake Sign Forest was also one of our stops. It started with a single sign back in the 1940s and officially passed 100,000 signs in 2023. We met a great full time family and chatted with them in the forest. Alex and I have a similar background and his wife was a COTA. After extensive searching we found the KYD sign and added our last NMS dog tag close by. If you’re in the area check it out.
We pressed on to the west and made it to Teslin. It was a long drive day, but beautiful. Instead of paying $40CAD for an electric only site we stayed at a rest area along Lake Teslin, west of town. Our lithium batteries have been holding up well during the drives and keeping the fridge cold. We even gained about 20ah before the sun went down.
The rest area was busy, but the highway really quieted down at night. We got some good sleep. We have a little PSA for those who like to stop over in these spots…this one had 6 garbage cans. Trash goes in the cans and pulling your rig close to the wood line and dumping your black tank is unacceptable. Remember, it’s easy to be a good person and leave a place better than you found it.
