Skagway AK
Saturday we explored the Skagway area. Instead of driving back up and through Whitehorse, we booked an Alaska Ferry ride to Haines. The guy working at the Ferry Terminal has lived here for 20 years and was a wealth of knowledge for things to do around here.
After getting our tickets booked, we went out to the docks to check out the shoreline. There was a new cruise ship in harbor and it was big! The ocean was at low tide and it was super impressive to see how much of a tidal shift there is here.
- Today’s tide times: Sunday, April 28, 2024
- Low Tide: 9:02 AM, height: -2.95 ft
- High Tide: 3:25 PM, height: 15.61 ft
- Low Tide: 9:10 PM, height: 2.93 ft
We left the water as it looks like some clouds were rolling in and we wanted to get to the city overlook on Dyea Rd. The view from up there did not disappoint. The ride out to Dyea Flats and the campgrounds out there was really nice. It allows you to see a long way down the Fjord. As we were crossing the bridge to the old village on the flats, I spotted our first bear on the river bank. It was either a small grizzly or a color phase black bear. I forgot about our binoculars…
There are a few campgrounds out in the flats area, I don’t recommend driving out there with a large rig. The sites are pretty small and the road is narrow in quite a few spots. The flats dispersed camping would be cool if you had something similar to a sprinter van. On the way back into town, Katy spotted some Sea Otters playing in the water where the ocean meets the Tayia River. Wendy pulled over to check them out and off to sea they went.
Back into town we went to Lower Reid Falls which is pretty cool, not a ton of water but pretty and tall. We then walked through the Gold Rush Cemetery. There are a few original headstones, but there have been quite a few replaced by wood with names and dates on them.
Skagway Brewing Company has some good beers and food. The fish sandwich was a win and if you get the pretzel, ask for a cup of beer cheese soup to dip it in. There was a lot of foot traffic in town as there were now two cruise ships. We were here for the first 3 of the year. The afternoon was spent hanging out in the park, enjoying the sunshine and talking with fellow travelers. Great day!
