The long boat to Haines
Sunday we woke up to clouds and strong winds blowing right up the inlet. We had breakfast, watched a little TV/Youtube and then got ready for our boat ride. I ran down and purchased a 1/2 tank of diesel before hitching up. It was 5.95 a gallon. I wasn’t sure if Haines would be better.
We made it to the ferry terminal at 10:45 and we were supposed to be sailing by 12:30. That didn’t happen. Apparently there were some issues loading other RVs. We got underway an hour late after loading up. We were the last RV to get on as we were the longest (hitched up) and the first to get off. We had a quick snack on the boat. Double bacon cheeseburger and a cup of clam chowder for under $20 and it was good. The sail over was beautiful even though it was cloudy and rainy. We were also on the same boat as all of our new friends.
We arrived in Haines and went into town to find the grocery store and a bar open. Haines is pretty sleepy on a Sunday. We looked around town and then drove back towards the ferry dock to find a spot to stay for the night. We found a paved pull off that didn’t have a no camping sign and set up.
Haines is the Eagle capital of the world and we had a 1/2 dozen fly by in the first 15 minutes. There were also a ton of sea ducks and sea lions out our window. We had/have a million dollar view for free as I write this. We watched our ferry leave and watched the Carnival cruise ship leave port around 8:00pm. It’s amazing how small they look when leaving the inlet with the mountains in the background.
