How is it August?
How is it August already? Another month passed by in a blink of an eye. The past few weeks have been busy with work (the campground and our business), a quick trip to Denali where we stayed at Riley Creek Campground and now we may or may not be down on the Kenai Peninsula.
The trip to Denali was great and was gifted to us by some great folks we met back in 2021 in Virginia Beach. We were a little late getting in because of the Riley Creek Fire, but that’s OK because the firefighters did an amazing job. We were also able to add a 3rd night in the park and met some great camp hosts.
We went in to Savage Creek multiple times and did the river hike, it’s a mellow 2 mile loop and we saw a bunch of ground squirrels and Ptarmigan. Out at Mountain Vista, we saw the largest Bull Caribou I’ve ever seen and he was still in velvet. He was walking towards a couple who was hiking about a mile away from us. The wind was just right and he didn’t know what they were. He was big!
One morning I received a call regarding a RV repair in Denali…boy they were lucky I was close otherwise it would have been a 2.5 hour drive one way for a service call. They were at Savage Creek with a rental RV and the slide wouldn’t come in. I picked up the husband at the visitor center and went into the park with him. I found some flooded electrical components and had to use jumper cables to get power to the slide. I hope the rest of their trip was good.
We also got our bikes out for the first time in a long time. We headed into town on the paved trail system and looked around a bit. We went into the Princess Cruise Line Lodge area and had a drink over looking the Nenana River and had a nice conversation with a couple from New Orleans. They think we should have a YouTube channel. I don’t think they realize how many RV channels are already out there.
As I said, work was busy and I ended up with a sprained wrist at the campground on a hot day after cutting grass and trying to drill a 4” hole in a metal door. It must have been a combo of the heat, dehydration and pain, because I passed out twice after the drill caught and I felt a pop in my wrist. I thought I broke it and my fingers went numb right away. Long story short, I sat down on a golf cart and woke up to my boss splashing water on me. Fast forward to 10 days after this occurred and my wrist is still sore, but I can use it.
Summer is coming to an end up here in the land of the midnight sun. We are losing approximately 5 minutes of light per day and we had to have a night light on in the bathroom this week. The midnight sun was cool, but we are looking forward to some dark nights and the Aurora.
We also dropped off our first few bags of produce at the Foodbank from our Food is Medicine garden. There was a ton of Kale and some herbs. The tomatoes are about ready to start turning orange and this week may be the first delivery of those. We also had another volunteer event at the Foodbank and were able to help them set up for a community barbecue.
Katy had been knocking out quite a bit of continuing education for her OT license. I’ve done a little bit for my work, GE air conditioning…exciting stuff. I was also able to meet up with another seRV family in Fairbanks at the Lowe’s parking lot. We had a great conversation, albeit a short visit. Thanks FOS family for the inspiration and encouragement.
