Out of Alaska

The drive from Alaska to Arizona began on Monday after getting up, dumping tanks and doing some laundry.  3,930-ish miles to go.  We said goodbye to Alex and Jackie, a quick goodbye and thank you to Gary and we were headed north.  The drive up to Anchorage was full of low clouds and rain.  We stopped to resupply at Walmart and Petsmart and then continued north.  I hoped to visit a high school friend in Wasilla, but he had other things to attend to.

We fueled up in Palmer and then drove the Glenn Hwy out to Matunuska Glacier.  We found a great paved turnout at MP 99.  We had a glacier view from the camper, thanks Milepost.  We had some dinner and watched some pre-downloaded movies.

Tuesday we woke up to nice weather and a great view.  As we headed further into the mountains, the weather turned and it was cold, foggy and rainy.  We did see quite a few Dall Sheep and a moose during the drive.  We picked up some fuel in GlenAllen and then hit the Tok Cutoff.  It is a beautiful drive along the Wrangell National Park.  The sun came out and it got into the high 40’s.

Upon arriving in Tok, we sent some mail, picked up some snacks and took on more fuel.  Our rule on this trip and in AK in general is to fill up if you’re close to a half tank.  Driving west out of Tok we knew we’d be hitting some rough roads.  We have to say the road was in better condition April 30th than it is now.  We made it to roughly 1 hour from the border and found a freshly paved turnout with a great view.  Again, dinner and a movie then bedtime.  Alaska must have known we were leaving and gave us a little bit of northern lights.
