Camped in our 48th State
Wednesday we drove over to Great Basin NP. There was a whole lotta nothing. We fueled up in Delta UT and pushed on to Baker NV. We stopped in at the National Park Visitor Center and learned that Upper Lehman Campground or Baker Creek would be our best bet for a spot.
We went to Upper Lehman first as it’s a paved road and campground. We found a few available sites, but it’s for small class c’s or camper vans. The spots we tried would have required a ton of leveling blocks and good luck. After our failed spots, we moved on to Baker Creek. It was 3 plus miles of gravel washboard that wiped out most of the time I spent washing the rigs. We found a pull through spot in the shade in the lower section of the park. After taking the trailer off the truck, I couldn’t level the trailer front to back. Back on the truck and 3 leveling blocks out I tried again. It was still front high, but I was done.
We had a snack, hung out at our site for a bit and took a drive up Wheeler Peak to 10,000’. Great Basin is a huge area in the western states where rivers do not flow to any oceans. It was a pretty drive and this park would probably be higher on our list if we were into high altitude hiking. Just walking the dogs through the campground at almost 8k was a project. In our opinion, if you are driving by or want to take some higher hikes, come check this out. There are also the Lehman Caves, but the tours were sold out and we’ve been to some magnificent caves already. We’re trying to hit as many NP’s as possible, but this one was just a one nighter for us. On a positive note, the views on the drives were nice and unique and the dark skies were great at night too. We also camped in another state. One to go in the lower 48 and I’m not sure we’ll ever get Hawaii.
