Finished the Mighty 5
Monday we left Capitol Reef and headed east along the highway through the park towards Moab. The drive was beautiful even after leaving the NP. Think of blue basin and the painted hills in Oregon. The drive over to Canyonlands took us about 3 hours with a stop for fuel and a snack.
Canyonlands was the last park of Utah’s Mighty 5 for us to see. The park is really big and is laid out in 3 Districts (The Maze, Needles and Island in the Sky). We chose Island in the Sky and drove down to Horse-thief Campground which is BLM/National Forest. Speaking of Utah and Federal Lands, there is a big push to convert Utah Federal lands to state control. In my opinion, this is a mistake as a lot of these areas can then be sold off to the highest bidder. If you enjoy public lands, look into it. Alright, off the soapbox.
Horse-thief is laid out with big sites and has beautiful views. We set up the rig, walked the dogs and headed into the park to explore. We feel the canyon views are just as good as the Grand Canyon. I know…I said it. Canyonlands may not be as deep, but it is beautiful and you should definitely check both of them out. Maybe it’s because Canyonlands is no where near as popular as Grand Canyon.
We hit up several viewpoints, checked out the NP campground which is walking distance to a popular overlook, hiked up to Upheaval Dome and got out just as the rain was moving in. We also stopped at the visitor center with two minutes before they closed and picked up our sticker.
Back at the rig we made up some leftovers and plotted our next move. We put ourselves on a wait list for a tour in Mesa Verda NP in the Cliff Dwellings. Colorado is our last state in the lower 48 and is only two hours away…
