Into BC again.

Friday we woke to 33* and partly cloudy with a nice sunrise.  We rolled into the town of Teslin and stopped at the small market for a few items.  We then fueled up at Riverside and were able to dump tanks and take on fresh water for free (with fill up).  This should give us 5-7 more days.  As we were doing tanks we observed the start of a march.  All across the Yukon (maybe other territories) there are marches to remember the natives who were forced into government schools and abused or killed while trying to make them less savage and more civilized.  The drumming and singing were very powerful as they marched from the bridge and into town.  They were all wearing orange.

We drove our way out of the Yukon and into BC.  We saw hundreds of Bison, some Dall Sheep and our First Canadian Lynx.  The Lynx was tall and lanky, I thought it would be a lot puffier at this point in the season, I still wouldn’t want to try and pet it.  Side note on the bison:  About 5 miles outside of Liard Hot Springs we saw another large group of bison.  One was on the opposite side of the road and appeared it could not stand.  Upon closer inspection, we couldn’t see any blood and its fur looked fine but it definitely seemed injured.  We stopped for fuel at the Liard Lodge and I inquired about fish and wildlife officers.  I then explained what we saw and the clerk said they would make a call.  Her name was Kylie and she said sometimes they get really fat and have a hard time standing up.  Who knows?

We made our way into Muncho Lake Provincial Park and it is more beautiful than I remember.   The deciduous trees are all gold and yellow and Muncho Lake isn’t frozen this time and it is so blue right near the shore.  It’s in the 30’s and raining, we hope the sun is out tomorrow. The provincial campgrounds are all closed so we are at a “wide gravel pull off” for the night with the water 20’ from our door.  If it’s nice tomorrow, we may double back a few miles to the Northern Rockies Lodge and stay another day.  We could do laundry and maybe fish…

Saturday we woke up along the lake, it was in the low 30’s and we could tell the sun was trying to come out.  The projected high was near 40 and we decided to have breakfast at the Northern Rockies Lodge.  We made our way back to the lodge and found they were doing takeout sandwiches or a breakfast buffet instead of off the menu.  We decided to pass on staying at the lake as 40* was not what we had in mind.

We continued west and the sun fully came out.  It was a spectacular drive day weather and scenery wise.  The fall colors were popping, the lakes and rivers were blue and emerald green and we saw a bunch of wildlife.  Caribou, mule and whitetail deer, stone sheep and another Lynx.  We stopped for fuel at Toad River and then pressed on to Fort Nelson.  We got fuel again and had lunch at the Triple G.  The food was really good and we chatted with the locals about their summer.  It was really dry and plagued by fires.  They also told us they have had 9 suspicious structure fires in the past two weeks.  Weird.

We pressed on to Fort St John BC and only have about an hour left on the ALCAN.  We stayed the night at the Rotary Campground and had electric hookups.  We charged everything that needed charging and did a few loads of laundry.
