One more of the Big 5.
Thursday we drove back across Utah after getting a few gallons of diesel in Baker NV. The price was $4.60/gal which is the most we’ve seen in the lower 48 so far. If you’ve ever been to Baker, you know why. We also stopped again in Delta and visited one of the nicest Ace Hardware stores I’ve ever been in.
We made our way over to Capitol Reef RV between Teasdale and Torrey. It is a new park with full hookup sites and they are still under construction for the office, bathrooms and laundry. They are also building 10 cabins. The views are great and it is set away from the highway so it is quiet. We stayed 4 nights and also saw the northern lights.
We spent a few days in Capitol Reef and were disappointed that the scenic drive from Fruita was closed for construction. The rock formations and colors are impressive. The Fruita area is like a little oasis in the middle of the rock canyons. It is a series of orchards that stretch for several miles. The pie at the Gifford house is also worth a stop. If you get a chance, the campground at Fruita would be a cool spot to stay.
We also checked out the petroglyphs along the main road. It’s a short walk along a nice boardwalk and is really cool. It makes you think about the people who inhabited this area long ago. Another worthy drive is the 12 over boulder mountain. It gets up to almost 10,000’ and has amazing views. We turned around at Boulder City vs heading all the way to Escalante.
We had lunch one day from Capitol Burger and it was a 10/10 food truck. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything in the menu. The regular burger and the Mac n cheese burger were definitely good. We also made a stop or two at Etta Place Cider Co. It was a nice stop, the semi dry cider turned out to be my favorite. A lot of the ciders are really dry and done English style…not my cup of tea. They are a Harvest Host so if you’re a member you can stay the night. It was nice to slow down again for a few days after driving so much.
