Yukon Territory
Wednesday morning brought us fog and 37*. It was a slow ride to the border after coffee and dishes were done. The road was rough. The border crossing went ok, we were asked quite a few questions had our papers looked at and were on our way in 5 minutes. Picked up fuel and a sandwich in Beaver Creek and sent out a SERV post. Had cell service for a few minutes and hit the road. The weather and road conditions were spotty all the way to Destruction Bay. The weather cleared for us at Kluane Lake and we decided to pull off the road early and stay at Congdon Creek on the west side of the lake. We landed a double spot 2/3 and the site was great. We walked the beach, played fetch with the dogs. Had a fire and made chili on it. The wind really picked up after dinner so we drowned the fire and came in for the night. Yellowstone reruns after dinner along with some popcorn to cap off a nice afternoon.
Thursday morning we woke to clear and cold weather, 37* and left Congdon Creek. Our first stop was at the visitor center at the south end of Kluane Lake. The center was closed, but there were about 100 Dall Sheep up the mountain side behind the center. We also saw a lot of ruffed grouse in the area.
The drive all day was nice and quite the contrast from the end of April. Yellow leaves and yellow tamarack trees everywhere, accented by fresh snow on the mountains. We only got slowed down once for construction which was line painting. One inpatient driver in a new red Chevy pickup thought we were the issue and drove his tires down through double yellow lines until his tire treads were completely yellow and he ruined several kilometers of work. He probably ruined the side of his truck too or maybe it’ll buff out…Jacka$$.
We stopped in Whitehorse to exchange some money, we got $255 for $200 US. We also had lunch at Lumel Glass Blowing studio, they have a little cafe on the side. It was a great stop and the first time I’ve tried Arctic Char. We had the tacos and chips and salsa. It was spicy, but really good. After more fuel we pushed onto Teslin Lake and stayed in one of the Yukon Govt parks again. There was a beautiful Red Fox in the parking lot on our arrival. It was in great shape and had a nice winter coat. The beach was nice and we swam the kids again. Duncan loves fetching in the water and both pups had a good time. This was the second day in a row and both of them are showing their age. We had some leftovers and watched more Yellowstone reruns.
