CO to Wyoming

4/15 Tuesday.  We got up and got rolling early to head to Bear Lake based on a rangers recommendation of how beautiful it is.  I knew it was at elevation, but thought maybe it was geothermal as he also told us the snowpack was still 49”.  We should have paid attention to the “signs” that were presented to us.

We had a time getting through a mess of a construction zone that wasn’t labeled well and the flaggers just turned signs.  We eventually got up to the entrance station to find out the entrance was closed for a controlled burn.  Back down to the construction zone and had a 10 minute wait.  As we were exiting the construction zone, we came upon a crash and waited for tow trucks.  It looked like everyone was fine and the Tesla didn’t start on fire.  At this point we are an hour into our adventure and no where near where we wanted to be.

It was a pretty drive up to the lake, taking the long way around.  The mountains were beautiful and the 200 yards to the lake were snow packed.  The lake also had several feet of ice on it.  The way the ranger played it up, we were expecting more.  Oh well.  We drove back into town and the controlled burn was ripping.  We had some pizza and then went back to the trailer for laundry and packing.  Estes was a nice stop.

4/16 Wednesday.  We got back on the road before 9am, headed for Casper.  We fueled up near Fort Collins and found another Trader Joe’s.  That was a big bill as it is “last one” for a long time.  The drive up the 25 was rather easy.  Between Cheyenne and Wheatland there was a wind warning for gusts above 40 and campers under 20,000 lbs were not to be on the interstate.  We both missed that sign in Cheyenne and had been passed by several  Sheriffs with no issues.  It was windy, but nothing we haven’t been in before.  We stopped at Gruner Brothers Brewery in Casper for the night.

Based on the winter storm warning in the forecast, we had some food and a beer and decided to press on.  We made it a couple hours north to Sheridan at the KOA for the night at about 6:30.  We had a pull through site and it was level, front to back and left to right.  No adjustments needed.  The rain started on our arrival and the temps started to drop from the mid 60s.  The forecast just continued to deteriorate.  We watched some TV and just hung out.

4/17 Thursday.  We woke up to 32 and snow.  The traffic cams in Wyoming and Montana did not look favorable so we hunkered in for the day.  We made some calls and moved some appointments around for our time in Helena.  There’s no need to push if the conditions don’t fit.  The interstate was closed for about 7 hours today between Cheyenne and Wheatland.  Other than that, there’s nothing to report…
