On the Road Again. Go North!

Monday 3/31.  We took our time getting out of Sierra Vista today.  Both of us have been dealing with desert allergies for almost a week now.  All sorts of meds on board.  We’ve really enjoyed our time in AZ and can’t believe how fast 5 months went by.  Even the cold and cloudy days were sunny.  It was a nice winter.  I broke a step streak today after 47 with 10k plus.  Prior to that it was 78 and the flu knocked me out for two days.  I’ve worn out two pairs of Brooks shoes since November.

We left at about 10:45 and headed for the Chiricahua National Monument.  It was a nice drive over and then we realized there are no vehicles over 24’ allowed in from the west side.  We couldn’t even get up to the visitor center.  Scratch those plans and back to the highway.  We got on the 10 eastbound at Wilcox and made our way into NM for the first time in 4 years.  We then headed up to Silver City and out to Cliff for two nights.

We stayed at a beautiful Boondockers Welcome spot on top of a hill with amazing views.  We got settled in, walked the dogs, had dinner and watched some TV over the antenna.  Pretty chill night.

Tuesday 4/1.  We had a really quiet night of sleep out here.  Made some coffee and had a snack then walked the dogs.  I unhooked the trailer and we went in to explore Silver City.  We watched some YouTubers (Adventures of A Plus K) who visited here a while back and wanted to check it out.  We wandered through the historic downtown and it is really cute.  There were a ton of shops that were closed, but we enjoyed our time.  We had a New Mexico Rueben for lunch and some beers at Little Toad Creek Brewery and Distillery.  They added green chiles to the sandwich and it was really good.

We also popped in at Tranquil Buzz coffee and picked up some beans.  They asked how we wanted them ground and I told them an old school percolator.  They said OK and then had three of them standing at the machine trying to figure out the proper grind.  I think they ended up doing it right.

We headed back to the rig early as there is a big wind storm occurring as I write this.  It’s gusting to 60 so we have the truck hooked back up with the weight distribution bars on.  We are mostly protected by the hosts shop, but we are still rocking.  Only 7 hours to go.

Wednesday 4/2.  Today we rolled east from our Boondockers welcome spot pretty early in the morning.  Early for us was 0900 and we stopped at the Gila Valley Deli and Bakery for breakfast burritos.  This place is must stop.  The burritos are great as well as the cookies and bread.

We drove out to Mimbres after getting some diesel and dropped the trailer at the Imogene Wilson Mimbres Cultural Museum.  After locking everything up we took the scenic drive up the 35 and 15 to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.  It was a beautiful drive and the dwellings were amazing.  I remember seeing them in school textbooks and finally got to see them in person.  These dwellings are still 80% original and they are really impressive.  The walk to the dwellings is a 1 mile loop with some steep sections of stairs and a few ladders.  It is a non guided tour and you can go at your own pace.  We liked this aspect better than Mesa Verde.  They are great and you should check out both if you can.

We made the drive back down and the winds really picked up again.  It was gusting in the 40s and I took a quick walk around the museum grounds.  The museum itself is only open on the weekends.  Whether or not it’s open, this is a great Harvest Host stop.  After taking the road up and back, I would not want to tow our trailer up there.  We made some homemade Cuban sandwiches and watched a repeat movie.  Back on the road north tomorrow.
